Weekly Update for 2/23

I hope you all had a wonderful vacation! We are ready to get back to learning. This is our last week in the second term of second grade! This is what we will be doing this week...

Reading
With the term coming to a close, I will be spending the week checking in with the children individually on their reading. We will also continue working on our comprehension skills of visualizing and inferring while reading.

Writing
This week we will be doing our final Opinion writing piece which is our second term writing prompt. I am eager to share their Opinion pieces at conferences. The students have really enjoyed this unit!

Math
We will spend time this week on the following concepts: telling time to the quarter hour, multiple addend problems using base ten block pictures, compliments of 100, doubles facts, and collecting and recording data.

Social Studies
We are still enjoying our time in Europe and will focus on the country of Italy this week. The kids will get to create their scrapbook page which focuses on the famous places in Italy. We will also enjoy making mosaics!

*** Reminder that our class will be snowshoeing on Monday, February 23rd during Wellness class! Please send your child with their snow gear.

*** On Friday, we will have our first rehearsal for our upcoming Second Grade Performance which will be on March 20th at 1:45!

Homework Update for Week of 2/9

Unfortunately we have yet another short week to confuse the homework routine!!

-We picked out spelling words today, so the children should practice those words throughout the week and be prepared for the spelling check-in on Friday.

- Please have your child read for 3 nights this week and answer the 2 comprehension questions on the back of the reading log.  The questions this week are about problem and solution, so fiction books will work best.  If your child is reading a chapter book and they haven't come across the solution to the problem, they can simply write that they haven't read about the solution yet.

- A math practice worksheet was sent home today. Your child may choose to either complete the worksheet tonight (Tuesday) or tomorrow night (Wednesday). It is due back to school by Thursday, February 12th.

Thank you for your patience and understanding with these new routines.

Weekly Update 2/9

We are hoping to get in a full week of school this week before February Vacation!  Here are some of the things we'll be working on throughout the week…

Social Studies- We will be “visiting” our next continent, Europe.  This week we'll learn about the continent itself, and following vacation we'll focus on the country of Italy.  We will also have a quick mapping assessment at the end of the week.  The students will be expected to know the following vocabulary words: map key, cardinal directions, compass rose, and continents

Math- Last week we introduced the concept of subtracting with regrouping.  We will do some more practice with this throughout the week.  In addition, the students will be taking their Mid-Year math assessment on Tuesday.

Spelling- The spelling rule this week will be the hard and soft sounds of g and c.  The children's spelling words will focus on this concept.

Reading- During our reading blocks I will begin checking in with students individually in preparation for the term 2 progress reports.

Writing- Now that our restaurant reviews are complete the children will have the opportunity to try out another review of their choice.  Some ideas we've come up with are movie reviews, book reviews, toy reviews, and reviews of a place (such as an amusement park, store, vacation spot).

*Friday will be our last class party. We will exchange Valentine's and enjoy some fun together before vacation.  Thank you to Sasha and Emma Rose's moms (Mrs. Williams and Mrs Boylen) for coordinating our class parties this year!

Please note that school will be closed from February 16th- February 20th.  I hope you enjoy your break!

Updates due to Snow Days

Homework- There will be no spelling homework this week.  The children should read Wednesday night and Thursday night for their reading log and choose 1 question on the back of their log to answer.  I spoke to the class about answering the questions thoughtfully and in complete sentences.  I look forward to reading their responses this week!  In addition, I will be assigning a math homework sheet for Wednesday night.  Please have your child return that to school on Thursday.

Also, I will be sending home a class list with the children this week so they can begin preparing their Valentine cards.  As always, it is voluntary to hand out Valentines to the class.  If your child decides to do so, please make sure they include all of the children on the class list.  Thank you for your understanding.

Stay warm!

Weekly Update 2/2

Due to the snow days last week, we will be continuing with many of the concepts from last week.

Writing
This week, we will be editing the students restaurant reviews. This will be done through the use of checklists, peer conferences, and teacher conferences. Our hope is then to write a final draft of the restaurant reviews.

Reading
Our focus is going to be on inferring and visualizing to help the students with their reading comprehension. The goal is to have students combine their background knowledge with clues from the text to make a reasonable inference. We will talk about, draw, and record what they infer and visualize during reading to facilitate their comprehension.

Math
The students are going to learn the Vertical Subtraction Algorithm. This is the traditional 2 and 3 digit subtraction with regrouping/borrowing.

Social Studies
We are still in Mexico and are enjoying learning about the culture of another North American country. We are looking forward to creating our first scrapbook page!

** Reminder that Wednesday, February 4th is an Early Release for Professional Development. Please send a note if there is a change in your child's dismissal plan.

Stay warm in the snow tomorrow! I guess 8-12 is better than 35 inches! :)
