Weekly Update 5/31

Happy Memorial Day! I hope you all had a wonderful long weekend! I can't believe it's almost June!

We have a busy and fun week ahead! We are all looking forward to our first all day Robinson Field Day on Wednesday. For Field Day please have your child bring a water bottle labeled with their name. There will water filling stations to refill throughout the day. Please also have your child dress accordingly (sneakers and shorts). The children will be given a blue shirt to wear that they decorated especially for Field Day. Also, please don't forget to put sunscreen on your child. Children are allowed to wear hats and sunglasses if they wish. It's going to be such a FUN day! If you are scheduled to volunteer and would like to take your child home with you at the end of the day, there will be a sign out sheet in your child's classroom.

In terms of academics, even with only 3 weeks left of school there is still lots of learning to do! Our writing blocks will focus on finishing up the last details of our informational books. We will also be doing a personal narrative piece about Field Day at the end of the week.

In Math, we will be finishing up Unit 9. The last few lessons focus on solving number stories about 2 equal groups. The children will also skip count and add to solve problems involving multiples of 10 and 5. This will be an introduction to basic multiplication facts.

We are having a blast with our science unit, Earth's Surfaces. This week we will be examining rocks to determine what minerals they are made of. Students will also be able to identify things that make up soil and rocks. We will continue discussing natural resources and how people use them to meet their needs and wants. Finally, the children will do an experiment to discover how water effects the land.

Upcoming Events:

Weekly Update 5/23

Good morning!  We are entering our last full week of May today!  The warmer temperatures have been fantastic.  Here is a look at what we'll be doing this week.

We will begin a new Science unit this week!  This will be a study of “Earth's Surfaces.”  The lessons will be very hands-on.  The children will have opportunities to solve real-world problems through lots of fun experiments!

During our Reading blocks I will begin reading individually with students in order to assess their progress in reading since March.  I am seeing so much growth on a daily basis with all the children- it's so exciting!!

Our Writing time will be spent putting the finishing touches on our country books.  We will add a Table of Contents and a Works Cited Page to complete the books.  In addition, we will do some more personal narrative work during the remaining writing times.

Math this week focuses on a review on money.  We will review Equivalent Names for Money Amounts and try out an open response problem related to money.  The children will also be taking a district-wide math assessment, which looks at all of the skills learned this year in second grade.

Friday will be our JUMP ROPE FOR HEART culminating assembly.  We will celebrate all the donations we've received for the American Heart Association and have a chance to strengthen our own hearts as we all jump rope together as an entire school!

Have a great week!!

Weekly Update 5/16

I hope you had a wonderful weekend! It was nice to see so many of you at the Apple Blossom Parade! Here is a look at what we will be doing in school this week.

We are currently in the continent of Asia and learning about the culture of Japan. We will be working on our scrapbook pages which include writing a Haiku poem, which is a type of Japanese poetry. This will be our last week on our Trip Around the World so we will celebrate with a pretend trip home with all of the second grade students on Thursday.  Also, the students get to pick a continent that they really enjoyed and create a travel brochure trying to convince a traveler to visit their selected continent. The students will also be taking their assessment on the mountains and rivers on Friday (study guide was sent home last week).

In Math this week we will continue with Unit 9. The children will first use base-10 blocks to solve subtraction problems. Then, after they have a concrete understanding using the base-10 blocks, they will learn a strategy called "Expand and Trade." We will end the week working with money. The children will practice finding coin and bill combinations with equivalent values.

The students are continuing to work on their informational country writing during our writing blocks. We will be putting the books together soon and are eager to share them at our End of the Year Super Star Celebration.

Speaking of celebration, please mark your calendars.....

SECOND GRADE SUPER STAR CELEBRATION

Homework this Week:
Coming home on Monday is a long term project to wrap up our Around the World and Ancestor units. Your child will choose one thing they learned about the country they researched and present it to the class. There is a list of project options that they can choose from. The students will have 3 weeks to plan and practice their presentations. Therefore, homework this week will be a little different than usual. Your child will be expected to do the following:

  • begin planning their project
  • continue practicing the mountains and oceans (assessment is this Friday)
  • nightly math worksheets
Although we still encourage your child to read for their 15 minutes per night, there will not be a Reading Log to record what they read each night this week. Also, there will not be spelling homework for the week. Spelling will resume next week. If you have any questions about the homework, please let me know. Thanks for your understanding with these changes.

Weekly Update 5/9

Good morning and Happy Mother's Day!  I'm hoping for some sunshine-filled days this week as we look to accomplish the following:

We are traveling to our final destination on our trip around the world.  We'll be visiting the large continent of Asia!  There is lots in store as we explore this area of the world and get to know the countries, landforms, and landmarks most famous to this area of the world.

The children will be having their last day of country research this week and will spend their writing blocks completing their paragraphs.  All of the paragraphs will be combined with a few other pages of information and turned into a book in the next few weeks.

In math we will continue with our final unit of study, Unit 9- Equal Shares and Whole Number Operations.  On Monday and Tuesday we'll be exploring an open response problem related to sharing muffins with a group of children.  The children will have to figure out how to partition the muffins in order for everyone to get an equal share.  We will also begin looking at Fractional Units of Length.  We'll discuss how to record measurements that are between two whole units.

Our reading groups continue to go well.  I am enjoying meeting with the groups on a consistent basis and reviewing many of the skills we've learned throughout the year.  Over the past two weeks the children have had the opportunity to read several books at their instructional level to practice such skills as: reading fluently and with expression, retelling a story, and making connections.  Before we know it, it will be time for end of year reading assessments!

Here are a few reminders for the upcoming week:
  • Tuesday, May 10th- 2nd Grade School Store
  • Wednesday, May 11th- Mountains and Rivers Study Guide sent home (assessment will be on May 20th)
  • Thursday, May 12th- Safe Routes to School Program (rescheduled from last week)

Building 2-D and 3-D Polygons

We had a great time building shapes during math last week!

Weekly Update 5/2

It's hard to believe that it's already May! Time flies when you're having fun!

This week during writing time, we will continue with our country research and writing our informational paragraphs. The kids are really enjoying this project and doing a fantastic job! Also, the students will have the opportunity to research an African animal this week and write a paragraph or two about the animal they chose.

Speaking of Africa, this week we will focus on the country of Nigeria and will learn about the culture of the country. We will end the week working on our African scrapbook pages and doing an African craft.

In math, the students will be taking the Unit 8 assessment on Monday and Tuesday. Mid-week we will begin Unit 9 which is our last unit of the year. This unit will take several weeks to complete and will focus on Equal Shares and Whole Number Operations. The first couple of lessons will have the children divide shapes and use fraction vocabulary to name the shares.

On Thursday the kids will attend a presentation called "Safe Routes." This presentation will teach students about pedestrian safety (sidewalk, crosswalk, and parking lot). The kids will have the opportunity to "act" out some of the possible situations they may find themselves in.

I hope you have a wonderful week!
