Weekly Update for 6/15

I'm sad to say this will be the final blog update for the 2014-2015 school year!  It has been a wonderful year and I have truly enjoyed working with this group of children.  I hope you have found my weekly updates to be informative.  Our final week together will be filled with lots of fun, togetherness, and wrapping-up activities.

Here are a few special activities to look forward to…

All country projects are due Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.  The due date for each child was written on the original assignment sheets.  If your child is unsure of what day their project is due, please check in with me.  I am so excited to hear what they children have to teach us about their country of origin.

The Second Grade Talent Show will be held on Wednesday and Thursday.  This is a very informal way for the second graders to share their talents with one another.  In the past we have had kids play an instrument, sing a song, do a dance, perform karate moves, skateboard, and even hula-hoop!!  Depending on the forecast, we are hoping to have an outdoor show on Wednesday and an indoor show on Thursday.  The children will be scheduled on the day that best works for their talent.

Thursday afternoon at 2:15 we are looking forward to inviting families in for our Around The World Celebration.  We hope you can make it that afternoon.  The children will be sharing all of the projects we've been working on over the past few months.  It will also be a great way to say goodbye and thank you for all of your support this year.

Finally, on Friday we will have a Bridging Ceremony.  The whole school will get together to wish the second graders good luck as they head to a new school next year.  The second graders will then get to walk the Crisafulli Trail where they will be greeted by their third grade buddies.

I hope you all have a safe and wonderful summer! Please come back to visit!

Weekly Update 6/8

WOW, it's hard to believe that we only have 2 more weeks of school! Here's a look at what we will be doing this week.

Math- We will spend some time reviewing math concepts and getting ready for our End of the Year Assessment. The assessment will take place on Tuesday.

Reading- I will be spending the first part of the week finishing up our end of the year reading assessments with some children. Then, we will get back to reading groups and will be focusing on writing questions for the author. We will also enjoy some fairy tales and discussing similarities and differences between the many different versions. Feel free to ask your child about the elements of a fairy tale.

Science- We are having a great time learning about Earth's Surfaces. This week the students will do experiments where they will investigate how wind and water change the land. They will also learn about other forces that cause Earth's Land to change. Students will use the engineering design process to design, create, and test a solution to the problem of landslides. Things are going to get messy, but fun!

Writing- The students will start reflecting on their year in second grade by completing memory books, posters, etc..

** Move-Up Day is Wednesday, June 10th (rain or shine). If it's nice out, we will be leaving at 10:30 and walking the trail to Crisafulli. If it's raining, we will be taking a bus. The students will meet their Third Grade Buddies, get a tour of the building, have lunch and recess, and get to meet the third grade teachers and Principal/Assistant Principal. Students can buy lunch at Crisafulli with their REGULAR lunch ticket or can bring cash if they don't have a ticket. Of course, students can also bring their lunch if they choose.

** On Wednesday, the students will also have an introduction to the summer reading program that is held at the Fletcher Library during the summer. Hopefully many of the kids will participate!

** We are in need of egg cartons. If you have any at home, please feel free to send them in with your child. Thanks!

** Congratulations to our class for filling the marble jar! We are going to have our Game Day on Tuesday, June 9th. The children are welcome to bring in a board game from home to share with their peers. Please refrain from sending in electronic games.
